In this course, students will explore the dynamic relationship between sports, media, and information, focusing on how the media shapes and reflects sports culture primarily from a U.S. perspective. Students will examine the history, structure, and evolution of sports media industries, from print media and traditional broadcast networks to emerging digital and social media platforms. They will analyze the business of sports media, exploring revenue models, sponsorships, advertising, and the economics of broadcasting rights. Students will critically analyze how sports media covers and influences social issues such as race, gender, religion, and sexuality. Finally, they will engage with emerging trends in the field, including the growth of fantasy sports, the rise of esports and sports betting, and name, image, and likeness (NIL) regulations. This course does not meet any requirements for the Journalism, Strategic Communication or Media and Information major/minor.
